Obama has certainly gotten things off on the right foot, despite the Rush Limbaugh comments and the blatant attempts by Republicans (already!) to hold things up. Republicans — including McCain, who wants more tax cuts — are lining up to oppose any economic stimulus. 34 Republicans voted against Treasury Secretary nominee Tim Geithner, I guess because all of them are so good about paying their taxes on time. And what is perhaps most offensive, Labor Secretary nominee Hilda Solis — a GREAT choice, IMHO — has had her confirmation delayed by one “unidentified” Republican for reasons unknown.
I mean, really? Right off the bat, we have one of the largest media voices in this country saying he hopes Obama FAILS?
I know we’re talking about Rush Limbaugh, so logic goes out the window. But this is a serious issue. For the past 8 years, we were bludgeoned with the ideology that to oppose your President in a time of war was to oppose your nation and your god. But now, on day 2, it’s OK to openly root for one’s President to fail?
Doesn’t this not only violate the normally Republican concept of loyalty, but also the hallowed principal of “one nation”? Aren’t you supposed to respect the office, if not the person? Continue reading →
Today, my country united behind a man who spoke with confidence and intelligence, behaved like a man, showed humility and gratitude, and set an example for us all. We have been starved for this, desperate for real leadership. But that’s not what stands out to me. This is:
This morning, much of the discussion was about the color of that man’s skin. This afternoon, it was about what he said, and what he’s going to do.
And just like that…things changed.
Now I know that racism is still one of the biggest issues in this country. Continue reading →
I was watching this wonderful collection of Bush moments from the Letterman show, and I couldn’t help but think: how the hell did we survive this guy for eight years?
But it’s time to stop looking back. It’s time to look forward.
Oh, wait. I forgot — the past has a way of catching up to you, and that’s really what 2008 has been all about, right? All of the neocon chickens coming home to roost?
So here’s the bad news:
-Our country is in the worst recession (I think depression, btw) since the Great Depression.
-We’re bogged down in two “wars” that are unwinnable, in the conventional sense.
-Most, if not all, of our democratic principals have been destroyed, setting a dangerous precedence
-Our nation grows sicker and sicker every day as a lack of health care devastates the shrinking middle class
-Corporate America threatens to finish the job of taking over our government
-The Middle East threatens to escalate into a global conflict
-The global climate threatens to destroy our very existence
Of course, I’ve left out a whole buncha stuff, but this is enough to make anyone worry, and more than enough for one man to attempt to handle.
But to fend of the pessimism, here’s the good news:
1) Barack Obama is to be sworn in as President
2) Tomorrow
3) Lost returns on Wednesday Continue reading →
Chip Saltsman, who had been an advisor tothat veritable font of open-mindedness named Mike Huckabee, sent a whole CD to RNC members. The CD was titled “We Hate the USA,” and was filled with all sorts of parody songs that basically implied anyone who was, umm, not like them, hated the USA and were delusional.
Yeah, that’s friggin’ HYSTERICAL.
Ultimately, I don’t actually have an issue with someone this stupid saying things like this. Continue reading →
Tonight, the ugly side of America reared its ugly head — and I was there to do something about it.
I’m writing this post from my now-safe location at the Sheraton Sand Key in Clearwater, Florida, but the fun took place up the road at the Clearwater Tri-City AMC Movie Theatre, to be exact.
It began when I went to see Twilight. More in upcoming posts as to why I was seeing Twilight while on vacation, alone, at 10pm.
Anyway, this post was originally going to deal with what I saw at the movie theater itself: mainly, a $4 ticket, and a $5 large popcorn and large drink combo. That’s $9 to see a new release, and these prices were good Mon-Thurs, all times. Continue reading →
